Cultivate Your Mindset for Equity-Centered Practices
Building upon the work of Dismantling Racism, together we will dive deeper into defining white supremacy and how it shows up in our behaviors, explore how white supremacy is upheld in the ideologies and practices of design thinking, and examine how we might shift mindsets to more equitable, diverse, and inclusive practice. Intended for those in the beginning stages of learning about white supremacy culture and curious about its connection to design, in this 2.5-hour virtual learning engagement,
From housing displacement and gentrification to discriminatory education systems and workplaces, oppressive policies and social interactions, Black, Brown, and Indigenous people of color (BBIPOC) are continually forced to confront harmful experiences both present and past. Recognizing that those with lived experience (and therefore expertise) with an issue are closest to the approaches to address them, it is essential that we center BIPOC as leaders in the equity movement.
This session is grounded in an exploration of narratives of leadership and power. Recognizing the significant decision-making power traditionally held by those in titled leadership, starting in this foundation will give us an opportunity to examine our relationships to power and analyze how we might use it towards equitable practice.
How do we move from diversity awareness to action for equity within our institutions? This session will identify various factors that uphold exclusive organizational culture and suggest strategies for making the shift towards inclusion and equity through the lens of humility building, power shifting and more.

Language is always evolving. Language setting is the first step in any community- and equity-centered work. We cannot expect to work effectively and inclusively with others if we do not have a shared understanding of what various words and phrases mean or do not create opportunities for exploring the various ways language is being used or interpreted. When redesigning for justice, language setting is key to co-creating an inclusive practice.
Inequities and oppressive behaviors have been historically constructed to benefit some and harm many. In “How Traditional Design Thinking Protects White Supremacy”, we began exploring characteristics of white supremacy culture and how they can be perpetuated through our practices if we are not actively seeking to dismantle these harmful norms.

Equity-Centered Community Design, created by Creative Reaction Lab, is a unique creative problem solving process based on equity, humility-building, integrating history and healing practices, addressing power dynamics, and co-creating with the community. This design process focuses on a community’s culture and needs so that they can gain tools to dismantle systemic oppression and create a future with equity for all.
This session will define vulnerability and humility and their interconnected relationship, look at who traditionally gets to be vulnerable, racial caucusing, and group processing. We'll work through a lens of building humility and empathy, and acknowledge past harms, and organizational culture.
This session will provide a space to explore what it means to move through the world with whiteness (especially as it relates to engaging in equity work), challenge ourselves to identify how racism is showing up in our own behavior, and determine a path forward toward anti-racist practice and effective work as a Design Ally.
